Cupping Therapy Calgary

What is Cupping Therapy?

A therapeutic cupping treatment involves placing cups, usually made of glass or silicone, on the skin. A vacuum is created when placing the cup, and when it is applied to the skin, the tissue is drawn up into the cup. This increases the blood flow, loosens the fascia or connective tissue, and is thought to stimulate healing.

Dr. Rae Laberge, Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, offers sessions that are based solely on the usage of cups. She will use both fire cupping, glass, and the silicone cups.

What can I expect with cupping?
Cupping can be done with movement, so sliding the cup over the skin and/or moving the body under the cup, or it can be stagnant, leaving the cups in one place.  Cupping does leave marks, the skin will either appear red or purple, which is totally normal. It is simply indicating that blood flow was brought to the area.  Cupping doesn't feel comfortable at first but as the skin and tissues underneath relax you won't even notice the cups.

How does cupping work?
Cupping loosens connective tissue or fascia and stimulates healthy blood flow to encourage healing of the tissue. Because of the suctioning action by the cup it works to dilate all the tissue allowing everything to open and have an efficient exchange of healthy red blood cells into the tissue and flushing out the toxins and dead blood cells. It is similar to the way deep tissue massage can be used to break up scar tissue and reduce pain. The cups are placed on the soft tissue of the body, avoiding any bony areas and can be used with movement or simply left in certain spots. Cupping may cause temporary bruising and soreness, depending upon the degree of suction created by the vacuum and the level of internal stagnation.

Is cupping painful?
During a cupping session, blood oozes from the vessel and into the tissue leaving noticeable hickey-like bruising. It’s a very normal part of therapy, and it isn’t painful.  Cupping can feel a little pinchy at first but as the skin and tissue underneath the cup relax, you won't even notice them.
__

How many days does it take for cupping marks to go away?
Depending on how much cupping was done, how much damage there is in the tissue and your skin type, the marks can last anywhere from hours to weeks after your cupping session.
__

Can you exercise after cupping?
Avoid showering, swimming, intense exercise, steam rooms or sauna or any other exposure to extreme cold or heat for 12-24hrs after a cupping session.

What Our Clients Are Saying

As an older runner and triathlete, it is hard to find a massage therapist with similar interests and knowledge of the sport. Not only the massage but also the suggestions, comments and recommendations are what sets Christine apart from other massage therapists. I highly recommend enduraHealth services."
